Ear Dome Sizes Explained: Finding the Right Fit for Your BTE Amplifier
Ear domes are the small silicone tips at the end of your BTE wearable audio amplifier's tube. Getting the right size and type is not optional — a poor fit can make a $300 amplifier sound worse than a $30 one.
The Two Variables: Size and Type
Every dome has two characteristics: size (width) and type (open, closed, or double-layer).
Dome Sizes
Most systems come in small (8mm), medium (10mm), and large or extra-large (12–14mm).
How to pick the right size
- Start with medium.
- If medium is loose — size up.
- If medium causes pressure — size down.
Ear canals vary widely. Many people use different sizes in each ear.
Signs of a size mismatch
- Too small: Slips out, sound weak, whistling.
- Too large: Pressure or pain, jaw movement hurts.
- Just right: Secure, comfortable, clear sound.
Dome Types
Closed (standard)
Solid silicone, no holes. Creates tight seal. Maximum amplification. Best for moderate-to-strong amplification needs.
Shop: Extra Large Closed, Small Closed
Open (vented)
Has holes or mesh vent. More natural listening. Best for mild amplification.

Double (dual-layer)
Two concentric layers for maximum seal. Best for high amplification without feedback.

Which Type for You?
Open if:
- Mild amplification needs
- Own voice sounds too "boomy"
- Want natural ambient sound
- Want comfortable, unplugged feel
Closed if:
- Moderate to strong amplification needs
- Noisy environments
- Want strongest speech clarity
- Open domes cause feedback
Double if:
- Closed still allows too much ambient noise
- Need strongest amplification without feedback
- Very noisy environments
Replace Every 1–3 Months
Sooner if domes become discolored, stiff, or cracked. Always keep a spare pack handy.
Installing a New Dome
- Pull old dome off the tube.
- Clean tube end with dry cloth.
- Push new dome on firmly until it clicks.
- Tug gently to confirm secure fit.
